EPA lowers lead-contaminated soil screening levels
On January 17, 2024, the EPA issued guidance that recommends lowering the screening levels used to investigate and clean up lead-contaminated soil in residential areas where children live and play.
EPA seeks public comments on draft policy to strengthen scientific integrity
On January 24, 2024, the EPA released draft updates to its Scientific Integrity Policy for public comment. All EPA employees are required to follow the Scientific Integrity Policy when engaging in, supervising, managing, or influencing scientific activities; communicating information in an official capacity about Agency scientific activities; and using scientific information in making Agency policy or management decisions.
The EPA and Title VI enforcement
President Joseph Biden Jr.’s campaign platform carried a commitment to confront long-standing environmental/climate injustices and inequities, and it continues to be a regulatory priority for his administration. In addition to several initiatives by the EPA and other federal offices, the administration also prioritized enforcement of federal civil rights laws, particularly Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination against members of the public by recipients of EPA funds.
Auto dealers urge EPA to hit the brakes on stricter emissions rules
A group of more than 4,700 auto dealerships, calling themselves the "EV Voice of the Customer," sent a second letter to President Joseph Biden, Jr., urging him to "hit the brakes" on a proposed EPA electric vehicle (EV) mandate.
Reporting deadlines are fast approaching
Reports are due by March 1, 2024, for facilities subject to Biennial Hazardous Waste and Tier II Hazardous Chemical Inventory Reporting regulations.

Louisiana-Environmental Audits-Penalty Mitigation: Louisiana has enacted a law that protects persons or businesses from potential penalties that may result from the voluntary disclosure of violations of environmental rules found during a voluntary environmental audit. 

Louisiana-Environmental Audits-Disclosure: The owner or operator must disclose the violation(s) found during a voluntary environmental audit to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) in writing within 45 calendar days after discovery unless an existing law or regulation required disclosure in less than 45 calendar days.

Chemical manufacturer fined for alleged CAA, EPCRA, and CERCLA violations
In January 2024, chemical manufacturer Nox-Crete Inc., located in Omaha, Nebraska, agreed to pay a $37,026 EPA civil penalty and install a fire suppression system to resolve alleged violations of the federal Clean Air Act (CAA); Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA); and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
