COVID-19 has brought Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) into greater public awareness, but has also blurred the lines between what types of PPE are mandated by OSHA/MSHA, which protection is required by state law in certain occupational (and non-occupational settings), distinctions between types of respiratory protections and which need medical evaluation, fit testing and training. Beyond respiratory protection, OSHA/MSHA enforce a variety of other requirements ranging from hardhats and hard-toed boots to complex fall protection mandates and enhanced clothing and gloves against heat and chemical hazards. Some employers must conduct a written PPE risk assessment as well, and coordinate PPE programs with Hazard Communication program requirements. This session will cover the hot issues in PPE and the pain points from an OSHA/MSHA enforcement perspective. Best practices in addressing the hierarchy of controls and risk assessment will be addressed as well as recordkeeping requirements.
